Tasting Notes for the Evening's Wines

At this event we showcased five delicious wines all from the famous Spanish winemaking region of Rioja – a range of delicious styles from this classic Old World appellation! Here’s a handy reminder of the wines we all enjoyed.

Valdebaron Rioja Blanco

A classic from Bodegas Ondarre that balances the two styles of white Rioja; it's oaked and complex, but still with refreshing green fruit and acidity. Delicate aromas of white flowers are layered with green apple and pear. This Tempranillo Blanco has an elegant creamy texture and a deliciously long and mouthwatering finish.

Ondarre Rioja Reserva 2018

Bodegas Ondarre have hit the heights again with another classic in this stunning Rioja Reserva. Leather, vanilla and spice of traditionally made Rioja enveloped in a smooth and textured palate. Balanced, with ripe, wild strawberries and integrated tannins through to a long, lingering finish.

Ondarre Rioja Gran Reserva 2016

We're going right up to the top of the age range now with this superb Gran Reserva; a full 5 years in oak and bottle. The complex and mature bouquet offers rich fruit aromas, along with hints of spice and notes of raisined fruit layered with tobacco and leather. Elegant and velvety, this is truly lovely Rioja.

Ondarre Rioja Primeur

Switching to something more youthful, the Primeur is released early from the cellars (after 5 months) to showcase the young, fruit-forward bouquet. It's full-bodied with enticing notes of fresh black fruits underpinned by delicious oak spice. The textured palate is full of terroir expression.

Bideona Vino de Pueblo Laguardia L4GD4

Bideona, founded in 2018, offer a new perspective on Rioja wines, with an emphasis on site, rather than ageing. This wine, from carefully selected parcels around the village of Laguardia, is light and perfumed, with delicate floral aromas of wild strawberries and violet. These give way to a juicy palate with velvety tannins and an elegant finish.
